Match report
With rain set for later in the day it was decided that a 30 over game was the best format to play. With that in mind James Caldwell and Adam Parkinson opened positively and ran hard between the wickets in the face of some lively bowling particularly from the Horsmonden CC head coach. Although they were beaten a few times outside off stump they both played some fantastic shots (very much out of the text book) and kept the score motoring along with no chances offered. After a fantastic opening partnership of 163 (Adam 76 and James 87) they both disappeared in quick succession. Having waited a while to get in Ed Gardiner-Hill was unfortunate to get a balloon ball first up and offered a simple catch but Alastair Deighton and Duncan Ellis kept the scoreboard moving with 14* and 20 respectively to get the total up to 202 off our 30 overs.
Peter Schutzer-Weissman opened the bowling in kit borrowed from various family members and boots from James Caldwell and, having sustained a complicated injury while partying hard the night before, realised that running in was not going to be that comfortable. Having been encouraged by the captain to bowl as slowly as he liked he made it through his 5 overs off a shortened run up and bowled some good balls (5 overs 1 for 26). Alastair Deighton opened with his off spin from the other end and bowled very tidily without much luck (5 overs 1 for 31). All the while Will Finn was surprising the opposition with his alertness in the field taking two good catches and making a number of fine stops. Strangely the Grannies ended up with 3 invalids in the field being the youngest member of the team, the third youngest and certainly not the oldest! Mike Schutzer-Weissman took over from his brother and bowled nicely (5 overs 2 for 23) on debut in his green flash to take two wickets including a fantastic leg side stumping by Adam Parkinson. Charlie Ellis bowled at the other end and in spite of taking on the Horsmonden pro (who hit his first ball back over Charlie's head for 4) bowled with a degree of control (5 overs 1 for 29) and was unlucky not to get more wickets with a couple of catches going down in the deep (including one that will be long discussed by father and son in the Ellis household) and a debatable stumping decision. With the Horsmonden pro striking the ball well it became clear that the game rested on whether or not we could get him out and after a few difficult chances not sticking in the fielders' hands Paul Strange managed to hold on to give Duncan Ellis the prize wicket at a cost of 51 runs. Duncan (5 overs 1 for 29) and Ed Gardiner-Hill (5 overs 1 for 30) bowled through to the end being nurdled around by the Turks' two 12 year olds but the Turks fell short of their target finishing on 172 for 7 off their 30 overs.
Thanks to the Turks for arranging the pitch and the tea and for a good game of cricket. Thanks also to Will Finn for helping to get the side together and also for turning out to ensure that the full compliment of Grannies took to the field.
