The Grannies lost the toss and fielded first on a good batting track in bright April sunshine. Our bowling could best be described as "rusty" in this first outing of the season, with no one able to establish any rhythm except for Dom Fry (3 for 52), so the score moved along rapidly and by the time a delayed lunch was taken at 1.45, the Queries had 180 on the board for the loss of only 3 wickets. The onslaught from the Queries skipper, Bromley (91), and Sutthery (79), who put on 150 for the fourth wicket, continued after lunch, until the Queries generously declared at 283 for 6, in only the 40th over.

The Grannies’ reply started well with openers Adam Parkinson (29) and James Marsh (32) in no apparent difficulty, until Parkinson was unluckily run out backing up at the non-striker’s end in the last over before tea, to a deflection by the bowler on to the stumps from a firmly struck straight drive by Marsh. James Scott batted well for 35, before being bowled trying to up the tempo, Marsh having previously succumbed to the left-arm “Chinaman” bowling of Roberts, who subsequently also accounted for Jamie Williams (12) and Dom Fry (4).

Following Scottie’s dismissal, there was a dramatic Grannies collapse with Jamie, Dom and Dom Ely (0) falling for the addition of only 6 runs, followed soon after by Richard Williams (6) and Jon Staniforth (0), as the score went from 114 for 3 to 120 for 6 and then 132 for 8, before some stubborn rear-guard play from Bob Percival (11) and sound defence from Will Jerabek (4) took us to within 5 overs of salvaging a draw, before a moment of aberration saw Bob run out attempting a second run to deep extra cover. Will was finally out at the end of the penultimate over, the Grannies having batted for a total of 54 overs.

Despite the result, this was a very enjoyable game played in a friendly spirit, with an excellent lunch and tea. Many thanks to everyone for playing and special thanks to Dom Fry, without whose efforts in helping the Queries raise a side the game would not have taken place. Many thanks also go to Barry Aitken, the Queries secretary for arranging the fixture at this most picturesque of grounds once again, after an absence of several years, for organising the catering, and for umpiring, together with our own excellent umpire, Nick Holland.

Match info

One of the very very best cricket fixtures the Grannies play - against Wiltshire's biggest wandering club, the Queries. The venue has changed this year to the Army Ground at Tidworth, where the fixture was previously played for many years.

Location
Tidworth,
SP9 7TE

How to get there
If Travelling from London/the East (Basingstoke/M3/A34/A303)
•Travelling along the A303 Westbound (towards Amesbury & Exeter) IGNORE all exits to Andover (staying on the A303) until you see the signs for Tidworth and Cholderton.
• Leave the A303 at this exit. At the end of the slip road you will join the A338 signposted for Tidworth. Follow this road North through the village of Shipton Bellinger for about 2.8 miles.
• Just before you enter the town of Tidworth, you will see the cricket ground on your right hand side.

NB If you find that you have entered Tidworth, you have gone too far!

If Travelling From Tidworth Town/the North
• If coming from Tidworth itself, the easiest way to the ground is to leave Tidworth travelling south on the A338 (Salisbury Road). Once clear of the town, after about ½ mile, you will see the cricket ground on the left hand side.
