It was a close game for the most-part but Goodwood proved too strong at the end.

We won the toss and chose to bat first in the heat of the day. After four overs we were 9-2 and skip started questioning his decision. Parky and Si Baldey rallied and put on a partnership of 125. Free flowing batting saw us at 98 for 2 at the halfway stage. Runs came slower from the 20th over with Goodwood putting 5 men on the boundary. Both Parky and Baldey fell in reasonably quick succession and a useful stint from Jonno (as well as some bits and bobs from the lower order) saw us reach 190 (probably 20 short of where we needed to be).

Notable batting performances were Baldey 82; Parkinson 57; Garforth 24

Goodwood got off to a brisk start with their new Afghani player taking strike. He really has quite the story to tell having walked from Afghanistan to the UK as a refugee and it was great to see him involved with the local team. He also had a fantastic eye for the ball quickly setting about the Grannies openers. However, he danced down the track to the wrong ball from van Lare and Parky had the bails off before the batsman could even turn around. Justus was served.

Some tight bowling from Justus and Gibbs saw the Goodwood team falling behind the run-rate. It was then the turn of Ollie Baldey (our 12-year old left arm secret weapon) who is a young Alan Mullally in the making. He was shaping it well and bowled four very decent overs, including clean bowling the Goodwood opener in his third. Garforth and Stanners kept it tight all the way through but Goodwood stayed on track with the required run-rate. A couple of quick wickets made it interesting but at 6-down Goodwood’s Jonny Heaven graced the crease. Jonny has a bit of a reputation as a biffer and this was no exception. In the three overs at the crease he put on a quick-fire 27 – leading the Goodwood team to victory with two overs to go.

Notable bowling performances were van Lare 8 overs 2-32; Jonno Garforth 7 overs 2-27

A great day of cricket played in a very good spirit. We’ll get them next year!
