Match report

On a glorious day the Grannies took to the field against the Turks, who thanks to their limited numbers but more-so due to the damp green wicket were put in to bat. Their openers started cautiously, with Van Lare and Moseley quickly adjusting to the Stonegate slope and containing them well. Pressure built and chances duly came but were not held. The dreaded disease of the dropped catch took hold of the Grannies in much the same way that scabies had taken hold of the Turks 11th man. In all a mixture of 7 tracer bullets and sitters would be put to ground during the course of their innings.

Job and Sibree were brought into the attack and in part they carried on where the openers left off. Job removed their openers, one bowled and one very sharply stumped by Parkinson. Grundy removed their dangerous No.3 with his second ball and all was rosy for the Grannies. Ellis jnr. replaced Grundy and in tandem with Siva bowled a tight spell until the batsmen started to chance their arm and get after the bowling. The theme of their batsmen getting after the bowling continued with their 4 and 5 putting on 80 runs in short time. Siva and Van Lare accounted for this pair and a total of 200 looked highly likely until Morris came into the attack and haemorrhaged runs which meant the Turks closed on 233-5.

The Grannies went out to bat knowing that 6 an over would see them home with some to spare. Gullick and Morris started cautiously against the Turks openers, knowing that once their accurate spells were spent there was a plentiful buffet to come. As the buffet trolley arrived and the runs started to flow Morris and Gullick looked to make the most of it but were out for 41 and 49 respectively.

Parkinson and Ellis set about the trolley with gusto and the Grannies worm started to climb up towards the required rate. Ellis snr. departed for 14 trying to push the run rate along which brought Moseley to the crease. Having bowled a miserly spell with no reward Moseley started to take his frustrations out on the Turks attack. Parkinson departed for 24, again looking to keep up the momentum. At this point a Grannies collapse was long overdue however, Grundy, Sibree and Ellis jnr. bucked the trend and played supporting roles to Mosely, who was getting into his stride. The loss of wickets at crucial points during the innings and the introduction of Hill to the Turks attack meant that the game was always on a knife edge and going into the last over all three results were possible and very likely. Moseley was bowled for 49 trying to finish what he had started and with victory beyond reach Ellis jnr. and Job saw out the rest of the over.

The game was, as always, played in great spirits and everyone played a part with bat, ball or both. Special mentions must go to both Gullick and Moseley due to their obvious and shameful jug avoidance tactics!
