Result - Goodwood CC

Sun Jun 7th Grannies win

Match report

It was another cracking day at Goodwood. We were put in to bat first and told that par was around 170-180.

Adam Parkinson and John Newton opened up and immediately settled into the groove with some assured shots. Goodwood invested in new mowers over the winter period and the outfield was better than in previous years. However, it still plays like there is a residue of treacle on the surface. On a warm day, Parky and John found themselves running 2s and 3s for shots that would have found the boundary-rope at many other pitches.

At the halfway stage, and a very welcome drinks break for our bats, John and Parky taken us to 78 without loss and so were put under captains orders to accelerate. And accelerate they did.

After the break both men settled and quickly made their way to 50, charting impressive wagon-wheels that could easily have been mistaken for the spokes on a bike. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and John was unlucky to get a ball that kept low. Parky continued taking the game to the Goodwood bowlers and was joined at the crease by Si Baldey. Si had started to settle in but was dealt a bad hand and got a ball with a strange bounce. He became the first of (I think 5) batsmen to play-on that day.

Andrew Robertson came to the crease with 9 overs to go and the Grannies in a relatively strong position on 145 (thanks again to Robbo and the family for making the cross-country journey for a 40-over game). Robbo had been in fine form for his home club - Breadsall in Derbyshire. He strode confidently to the crease with his 9-iron and dispatched the first ball over the covers for 4. This markedthe beginning of a long final spell for the Goodwood bowlers. Other than some kamikaze calling from Robertson (including taking a 2 to the keeper) Parky and Robbo never looked at threat and took the Grannies to a commanding total of 221. Both finished unbeaten (albeit run into the ground) with Parky on 87 and Robbo on 52.

After a well-earned tea break, the Grannies took to the field with a tight display and some fine keeping from Tim Flood. James Tod and Tom Gibbs opened up with some tight bowling (particularly Toddy, whose 8 overs went for only 15). With Goodwood chasing the game, chances were always going to come and the Grannies held their catches, including a full stretch diving catch by captain Gibbs. At times, Goodwood looked like mounting a challenge to the toal but, missing their big hitter Johnny Heaven, they came up short giving the Grannies a win by 36 runs (Baldey 2-24; Chhibber 1-35; Fernie 3-46; Gibbs 3 - 12; Tod 1-15).

A great game that should be remembered for its superb Grannies batting display.
