Result - The Armadillos

Sun Jul 5th Grannies lose by 30 at Sheffield Park

Match report

In our first game at the newly restored Sheffield Park, the Grannies performed well in the field, to restrict the Armadillos to 190 for 6 of 41 overs. Dom Fry bowled throughout the innings - uphill - and in 20 overs had figures of 4 for 84, sometimes defying belief with the degree of movement he generated. Quinton Newcomb, Captain of England and a Grannies candidate, together with Jason Windsor, another candidate, were scarcely less heroic, bowling all the other overs tidily. A balanced side on Wednesday lost 2 bowlers, hence the burden especially on Dom.
In reply, one of those famous 'good-looking Grannies batting sides' - the supposed justification for inserting the opposition - were quickly 33 for 7. However, Jay Stockham, soon to be on World Cup duty, was dug in and, with our best batting arguably in the last 4 - alright not no. 11 - all was not lost.
Dom duly joined Jay in a 9th wicket partnership of 96 (surely shome record) before Jay departed for a well-constructed 57. That left only the wicket-keeper to help chase down 39 in 5 overs, but Dom perished on 42 and we fell 30 short.
The venue - scene a week earlier of a game between Old England and Old Australia to mark its opening - is a wonderfully picturesque spot and the square will no doubt soon settle down, with the care the Dills are lavishing on it. We are to play 2 home games a year there for (at least) 5 years as well as the game against them. A lot of Grannies are going to have a lot of fun there.
