Result - The Invalids C.C.

Sat May 30th Grannies lose, convincingly !

Match report

You may think you have a good batting side but never actually admit to it. Needless to say this simple schoolboy error was made at 8.00am on the morning of the match. That afternoon at 9 for 4 off 9 overs the mother of all Grannies' collapses was in full swing. At 53 for 9 the Invalids skipper took pity and asked if all 13 Grannies present might like to bat.

The Grannies having gratefully accepted, Ben Yeates decided that a three year lay off from cricket was not going to spoil his afternoon as he knocked off a quick 43 in helping the Grannies to a vaguely acceptable total of 125 for 12 at tea.

The other mistake a match manager might make is to assume that he has a reasonable bowling attack going by the name of Weston Simons. Sam had succumbed to the 'try and drink your younger brothers under the table' trick the night before and therefore was not about to bowl although he was often in need of one.

Johnny Rayer proved that there was still life in the old Stonegate wicket as he craftily despatched their first few batsmen, ably assisted by Charlie WS and the low shooter but once the Invalids middle order got established they cruised to 126 with 12 overs remaining.

The weather was exceptional, Stonegate was in fantastic nick thanks to Mark Beattie of the Rascals who now looks after it and Alice Yeates produced an excellent tea, very much in the tradition of Mrs James. The Bull still serves Harveys but the food has taken a dive of late so we are on the lookout for a new hostelry for next year.
