Match report

With the Grannies winning the last couple of years the Griffin came armed with some youthful talent ready to make amends. Having won the toss we decided to bowl first. We managed to contain the Griffin to 184 which at the half way point and with the batting the Grannies possessed was a very achievable target. Everyone bowled well, sharing out the wickets. A couple of very memorable catches, firstly Rob Wilsdon in the slips taking it low and to his right and also Ed GH rolling back the years with a full stretch dive that caused him pain for the rest of the day and a few weeks later. After a good tea we set upon our task. Opening up were the two Ed's (GH and Warner) who started well. Ed GH gave himself 2 balls to get his eye in after a cricketing hiatus of 12 years before striking the opening bowler back over his head and the hay barn behind the boundary. Ed Warner was looking elegant the other end despatching on any bad ball through the covers. At 34 for no wicket after 4 overs it was looking good. However Ed GH creamed a shot uppishly towards cover only for one of the aforementioned opposition youth to pluck it out of the air at some speed and suddenly our Swedish import was done for the day. That sparked a fairly serious batting collapse, partly down to some exceptional fielding from the opposition. Afaque came to the rescue with some mighty blows and a rapid 38 which gave us hope and something to build on. Then father and son, Mark and Sam de St Croix joined at the crease, 9 down with 80odd still required. Going into the penultimate over we needed 18, after taking 8 off the first 2 balls of that over, Sam was caught on the boundary for 36. Young Felix Warner aged 9, last man in on debut saw out 3 balls brilliantly but a slightly lofted drive was snapped up by short mid on. MdSC stranded on 48 not out and the Grannies lost by 10 runs with one over to go..a great game and a few post match beers enjoyed in the famous pub!!
