Match report
After what felt like our first Autumnal week, and the memory of last years wet weather cancellation, it was brilliant to get a match going against a mix of Odiham's 2nd, 3rd, 4th and women’s 11s. An equally eclectic, but youthful mix of Grannies made their way across to Hampshire for one of the final games of the season!
It ended 19 runs to the Grannies' favour in what turned out to be a nail-bitingly close finish.
The Grannies were put out to bat & with 3/4 of the opening 4 still trundling up the M4 with 15 minutes to go - there was a feel that thing could start off a bit messy.
Unfortunately, this destiny became a reality with Certified Lacquer Hunter L.Hancock getting caught at Mid-off in his second over. Fortunately, J.Carr & debutant T.Buxton had had their Weetabix that morning and proceeded to steady the ship with a 60+ run partnership. Both batsmen painting a colourful wagon wheel, and taking us to the halfway point of our innings. The partnership only broke post drinks to a C&B from their captain, I think somewhat down to T.Buxton fully de-padding to enjoy his squash at drinks. Regardless, the pair created the perfect foundation for a Solid Grannies innings, raising a total of 217 over 35 overs. The side kept a steady strike rate with everyone contributing runs, F.Falcon & G.Seddon (debutant) with close to 20s in the middle order & a notable 40 from another debutant, S.Casement. Exciting prospects for future Grannies.
F.Falcon & (another) debutant T.Houchin opened the bowling brilliantly for the Grannies. Piling the pressure on early doors, forcing Odiham to 28 - 2 after 10 overs. The opening Wicket a textbook caught behind taken by (the final) debutant L.Bodington at WK.
Another quick wicket fell, bringing Odiham’s number 4 & wicket keeper in, who really found his feet (& the middle of his bat). While others around him fell, he quickly climbed to a half century and was retired to the shed.
The Grannies' bowling attack, led by very impressive figures from O.Simpson (4-39) & J.Woodcock (2-36), kept Odihams scorecard at bay. For the most part, the Grannies looked in control of the game - until Daniel Warnakulasuriya made his way back to the crease. Presidente B.Percival had now arrived at the pavilion to watch this Junior Grannies' side almost bottle a straight shooting win. D.W made his way to a very impressive 89,* getting Odiham to 19 runs of our total. Stopped only by F.Falcon taking the wicket of Odihams number 11 - much to the side's & President Percival’s relief.
The game was rounded up with a couple of debrief ales discussing what’s been a fabulous Grannies season. On to next year!
