Match report
A memorable Grannies weekend concluded with a fantastic 3 wicket win at Oxford Downs. The Chairman behaved like Ben Stokes believing we could chase anything and inserted the opposition on a boiling hot day and an outfield quicker than Perth. Ed Moore on debut rattled off 10 overs of sustained skilful fast bowling but somehow did not take a wicket and although we didn’t flag we couldn’t take the odd chance that came our way and the home side declared 230/1 at halfway. The team kindly said in the changing room that the captain hadn’t dropped an enormous bollock as they couldn’t see us taking ten wickets to win if we had batted first.
Sam Pougatch immediately set about the target putting on 60 odd at great speed. Someone must have drugged (our) umpire at drinks as he then proceeded to give two absolute shockers against Felix Tritton & Simon Hungin and at 142/6 the Chairman confesses he thought the target some way out of reach. Sam was still going strong having passed 50 and Ed Moore having none of the negativity, hammering a quick 18. They put on 42 and at 184/7 Ollie Simpson came in, his dad in the pavilion telling all and sundry a Granny double winning weekend was on if they kept their heads. Sam somehow escaped another absolute shocker from the umpire on 95 who reversed his original decision and with Simmo batting the best ever in Granny colours they got us home in the penultimate over, putting on 50, Simmo 20 not out and Sam finishing on 124. A great win, a very fair declaration from the Oxford Downs captain and obviously a genius decision from the Chairman to bowl first.
The wins this weekend have been very satisfying but we know they aren’t the main thing. To play on great grounds in lovely settings with tremendous craic and camaraderie – well it would have been your co-founder Pou’s 92nd birthday on Saturday. He would have loved it all. Thank you. Well played.
