Match report

There was a real family feel to the team that turned out against Tilford on a beautiful and unusually dry August day. The line-up featured the father-son duo of the Sieberts, the Clarke brothers and three from the Amato family with son and daughter (called up, much to her surprise, as a very late replacement), making their debuts.
Tilford's Sunday XI looked strong, with an abundance of 1st and 2nd team league players, so there was some trepidation as we approached the toss. A 40 over game was agreed upon to allow a civilised tea break and Tilford, having won the toss, elected to bat. Thanks to some excellent all-round team bowling they were held to 191 for 7. Rupert Henson, showing his seasoned skill from the river end, was a force to be reckoned with, while Angus Hinton kept up the pressure from the pub end. Making his Grannies debut, Elliot Amato delivered a steady line and length, earning himself a couple of wickets. The spin trio of Clarke, Amato, and Siebert worked their magic, keeping the run rate down despite the unusually short third-man boundary that made fielders in that position almost part of the slip cordon.
Tea was enjoyed at the Barley Mow pub, a tradition since 1840, and with spirits high, the Grannies set out to chase down Tilford’s total, led by Nick May’s strong start. Just as with the bowling, everyone contributed with the bat, but it was Monty’s belligerent 80 that made the difference. We reached the target with both wickets and overs to spare and retired to the pub content that everyone had contributed to the victory.
