Match report
Another year, another solid contest between the Ramblers and the Grannies. This year, a 45 over match.
Winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, the Grannies got off to a solid start, with Matty Withers removing the dangerous Harrington with what I can only describe as the single best ball in my 20 year Grannies career: nipping back off a length into the top of off, we bore witness to the ‘Lesser-Spotted cartwheeling stump’ - a phenomenon indeed! 26-1 after 5.
From there the Ramblers rebuilt to 60odd before the ol’ bang bang opened the door, making it 63-3.
From there, hockey player Gordon-Lennox flicked his way to a chanceless (and exceptionally well-run) hundred, building Eton a commanding score of 281-9 off their 45 overs. With 8 bowlers taking part in the effort, Matt was the pick with 3, Maisey and Clarkey A both picking up 2. Special shoutout to Tritt’s obligatory 1 over of the season.
Faced with a daunting total, the Grannies were rendered to 15-2, with the tall MacDonough hitting lengths so short, they qualified for the Hobbit trilogy and the sensible MacDonough showing his experience, bowling great lengths with good shape to pick up both wickets.
Hancock and Maisey sought to rebuild, with Hancock reprieved in a much more gentlemanly fashion than the Aussies, when run out in a carbon copy of ‘that’ Johnny Bairstow incident at lords. Alas, he fell a few overs later.
Despite the scoreboard pressure, the Grannies continue to rattle along at over 5 an over, with Maisey attacking the change bowlers, ably supported by Woody and TPenton. At 190-6 with less than 100 required off the last 10, there was hope.
Sadly, searching for the centurion blow, Maisey fell for 97 leaving a mountain to climb. A Stella cameo (striking 26 at nearly 150s) Nad Ahmed was left last man standing with the Grannies 59 runs adrift after 41.1 overs.
When all’s said and done, another brilliant and enjoyable game of cricket with many memorable moments, but after 3 losses on the bounce - we really need to win next year!
