Match report
A youthful Grannies XI bounded up to Armoury House in May to take on an HAC XI. We've comfortably lost this fixture for as long as I can remember (which I admit correlates rather well with my selection), but have happily consoled ourselves with the grandeur of the venue and the quality of the local Zone 1 pub ecosystem. This year was to be different, nearly...
The year previous, we'd successfully negotiated a win-lose 40 over format, which proved more exciting, and importantly: shorter. However, the new HAC XI captain knocked us back. In return we won the toss and batted slightly longer than probably we should have, but none-the-less setting a competitive total of 205/9 off 46 overs. Four batters did a sterling job, providing runs and boundary-related entertainment - Kit SW (50), Sam Pougatch (22), Alex Younger (56), Joe Huxley (36). We felt confident at the break, especially as the weather became slightly more gloomy.
Rather astonishingly, HAC's #1 hit 123*, winning them the game with a mere 32 overs gone. We managed to take four wickets quite cheaply, with no other batter scoring more than teens. Special mentions to Mssrs Wilkinson, SW (Mike), Pougatch and Hancock, who bowled admirably well. But in honesty, where we had depth in our batting line up, we had a rather thin bowling outfit beyond the four guys who took the ball for the Grannies.
As usual, we said a friendly goodbye to the HAC and went straight to the pub, happy it was close (the game and the pub), and again very happy to have played in such a treasure of a cricket ground. Thanks to all those who played, recruited and joined us in the pub afterwards.
