Match report
Five months later, the Pakistan Test side would find out the perils of being 200 short in the first innings in a Test match on a Multan featherbed against Yorkshire's finest.
But before then, The Grannies somehow managed to find themselves in just such a position, or at least what felt like it, on a grey Wednesday evening on the banks of the Thames. In a 20-over match.
Put into bat by necessity (a batting line-up running five-deep as the 6pm start ticked round), the Grannies showed that they would not fall into the trap of Bazball by eking out 130 for five from their 20 overs. The innings was given a veneer of respectability only by the cool head of Larry Brennan (34no) and the big-hitting of Felix Tritton (33 off 30).
Still, with oppo needing more than a run a ball, the Grannies felt that if they built a bit of scoreboard pressure, a positive result might just be possible. But then the first delivery of the innings was deposited over the square leg boundary and the writing was on the wall. There were more sixes; there were no wickets; and a ten-wicket defeat duly came in the 16th over. On reflection, perhaps we were only 100 runs short of a winning total.
Five weeks later, a rematch was held, and a youthful bowling line-up restricted St Paul's to 129 for five. Another score of 130 would win it. The Grannies fell six runs short.
