Match report

After a challenging August beset by rain, a young Grannies side were greeted in Hampshire by early September sunshine. The countryside, outfield (and wicket) looked a juicy green and, accordingly, the home skipper put us in to bat. (The wicket actually played beautifully all game and yielded a high-scoring contest). Grannies got off to a flyer, with an opening stand of 137. Despite sampling all of the ales on tap in the excellent bar, the Grannies batters stood-up well to some wily bowling, reaching 281 off the 40 overs.

Determined to reply accordingly, the Odiham openers unfurled some flowing drives, while dispatching the loose balls confidently. By drinks, a couple of crucial wickets fell but the home side had kept up with the rate and all was still to play for. It was then very pleasing to see the screw turned by some disciplined bowling and sharp in-fielding. A couple of catches stuck and at one point a sub-fielder caught his father, much to the amusement of all. In the end Odiham fell just short.

The Grannies enjoyed a beer after the game and were joined by member, Andrew Don, who regaled the wide-eyed young team with tales of yore. All-in-all a great day out.
