Match report
In the days and weeks leading up to this wonderful fixture, much was made of team composition. Not only did the Grannies have a full side, 12 in fact! But there was a seemingly perfect blend of grizzled veterans and youthful exuberance. It was to be experience - creaky knees, cholesterol, and pessimism that would triumph over relative agility and supreme ill-placed confidence.
The Grannies batted first, put in after an executive decision was made that starting in the field with only 6 men may prove rather challenging - so much for the comfort blanket of a full side! On a difficult wicket, Arthur Pickard and Matt Siebert battled manfully seeing off the new ball before both were dismissed by excellent deliveries. Nick May then strode to the wicket and despite partners arriving and departing with alarming regularity made an invaluable 49. Thanks to useful contributions from Dave Amato and Hugo Orange, as well as number 11 Jimmy Martyr depositing his first delivery into the river the Grannies made a competitive 161 for 9 in their 35 overs.
After a minute's silence to mark the passing of Her Late Majesty, Tommy Lovill took the new ball and impressed in his first cricket for 4 years with 1 for 24 in his 7. Dave Amato also bowled with gyle and control recording 1 for 21 in his 7 but from the other end, control was often lacking. Multiple dropped catches and some questionable ground fielding from younger players proved costly. The FAS knocked the runs off 4 down and with 5 deliveries to spare.
Despite the result, it was a thoroughly successful outing with members of both sides enjoying the day both on and off the field.
