Match report
On a boiling Sunday afternoon, The Grannies were sent into the field. Four of our founder, Michael Pougatch’s, grandsons were playing and one of their ilk, Theo Tritton, opened the bowling with great pace and in a 35 over game The Grannies did well to restrict the home side to 237-5. There was a youthful exuberance to our side, with 7 under 30s, the fielding held up well (one flimsy long barrier aside) and after a gargantuan tea Sam Pougatch and debutant Rufus Hall set about the task of scoring at almost 7 an over. Rufus selflessly ‘removed the lacquer’ from the new ball according to the wise men in the pavilion and when Theo Tritton joined his cousin in the middle, he hit the ball hard in racing to a very fluent 59 in a second wicket stand of 112. Another debutant Jonty Carr cracked a Robin Smith-like square cut for four before a third cousin Max Felgate came to the crease, his first Grannies game in 4 years after moving to Vietnam. At the other end Sam Pougatch moved to his first Granny fifty, Max shook off the rust accumulated in Ho Chi Minh City and a partnership of 82 took The Grannies to the verge of victory. Max was replaced by his brother, Harry, Sam charged into the 90s but then ignored any nerves by walloping a six over mid wicket to record his maiden century in any cricket. He finished 123 not out and a memorable six wicket win with a couple of overs to spare. Truly a day to remember on so many levels as towards the end the over 40s sat in the pavilion, not needed, and enjoying every moment.
