Match report
After 3 late cry-offs, 2 down to Covid, the Grannies took to the field with 9 against BEWCC's 10. Gordon Lee, a Granny for this match, was only a distant spes, so by arrangement we batted. Billy immediately tore into the BEWCC opening attack and it took a cunningly flighted one from Tom Bell to bowl him, for 50. AdM, seldom one to throw away his wicket, played the anchor, ultimately going for 66, while Scottie came and went for 8; FdM (young Ferg) accumulated 15 nicely; Darren Almeida knocked up 11, while looking good for more; and in due course the late arriving GLee went to town on amongst others his father-in-law, seeing the innings through with 34* to 210 for 5 off the prescribed 35 overs.
BEWCC's reply was initially watchful, James Caldwell and Jay Stockham finding Billy and DA hard to get away. It took a sharp catch by Billy off GLee at short cover to remove Jay, for 22, and a fine ball from wily slow left-armer Ferg to do James in the air and have him stumped, for 39 (over to Mr Bluett to verify whether in Grannies history there has ever been a bigger age differential in a wicket-taking combo - ages available on application...). After the removal of these two it was left to Q Newcomb to play an attractive, boisterous, hard-hitting innings for 64 (Billy snaffling him brilliantly at long-off on the dive from a Scottie teaser) and Jamie Williams, who looked good for more than 16. But the tail fell away, Scottie ending up with four and the ever-green Fernie not being required.
BEWCC's total was 172 and the margin of victory for the Grannies 38.
