Match report

A match following on from a Shakespearean extravaganza the night before to celebrate the skipper's 50th would ordinarily have left the Grannies as slow starters. However the skipper had cannily invited most of the opposition to the party as well and so there was no advantage to be had for either side on the day after the night before!

In truth much of the day went by in something of a haze for most involved but there were some notable moments, especially for the skipper who for the first time played in the same team as both his sons and his brother.

Thrust into the field after an errant toss the Grannies performed commendably with the ball, restricting HWCC in the early overs in a way which meant they never really recovered. Strong bowling performances from Toby Rolfe, Merrick James, Jack Philpott and Simon Hodgson all laid a very solid platform for the introduction of the wiley Rob Salter who wheeled away for 9 overs in the middle of the innings and confirmed the Grannies stranglehold on the game.

A sporting declaration at bang on half time left the Grannies with 174 to win. The reply started well with Toby Sykes and Mal Madurasinghe finding the pace of the pitch and then dispatching straight in the V. A mini wobble which left the Grannies at 60 odd for 3 was then overcome in a century partnership for the skipper and Edward Philpott, who recorded the first Grannies half century of the season, ending unbeaten on 57. Grannies reached the target
with about 5 overs to spare and all were able to head home to nurse still pounding heads and reflect on a warm and wonderful day in the stunning surroundings of Bramshill.
