Sat Sep 4th The Grannies lose by 153 runs

Match report

So my first experience captaining a cricket match was as successful as the first loosener you bowl of the season. The dreaded COVID saw our 2 key players pull out late in the week but a team was put together with the help of the home team.

Tom Carr was given the new ball and in a very un-grannies like fashion, bowled the opening batter out for a duck leaving the score 0-1. Just the start we wanted, and the mood was suddenly lifted but this didn’t last long as the second partnership put a quick 150 onto the scoreboard. With the scoreboard pressure building, Harry Felgate was called up making his first appearance in whites for a few years. Despite Harry repeatedly telling everyone he couldn’t bowl and was going to be hit to cow corner every over, this was not the case to everyone’s surprise. Hazza found turn that Warne would have been proud of using an action right out of the Muralitharan textbook. After trapping the other opener LBW for 81, Harry continued to bowl a tight line and generated spin that would trouble the best. Finishing his spell with figures of 1 – 27 off 7 overs with 3 maidens, we must thank Harry for breaking a good partnership and for keeping the run rate to an acceptable level even by Grannies standards. Meanwhile, at the other end Charles Tritton was getting warmed up for his first bit of action in a few years. There were doubts about whether the back would survive so Charles opted to bowl spin. However, the competitive streak was quickly found again, and the run up got longer and longer. A terrific spell of bowling with Charles picking up 3 wickets including one caught by his son who was glad not to drop it. We expect to see Charles putting the Grannies top on again in the future. The fielding in general was good with a run out by F Tritton which involved a football flick up and a direct hit that Messi and Jonty Rhodes would have been proud of. Odiham ended their 35 overs on 279- 6 after the Grannies had worked themselves back into the game with some tight bowling and inspired fielding.

After a bite to eat while watching another England batting collapse, the Grannies sent star bowler Harry Felgate and captain Felix Tritton out to bat. Unfortunately, Harry didn’t continue his good form out to the middle as he was out LBW for 4 early on. Odiham at one point had 8 fielders in the slip region as the pressure built. The sight of a split 9-1 field got too much for skipper F Tritton as he tried to guide a ball through the leg side from the opener and ended up catching a leading edge which looped up to 8th slip. The walk of shame through the slip cordon followed. T Carr carried on finding the middle of the bat and brought up a well-deserved 50 in good time. C Tritton was also enjoying his day and hit a quick fire 21 before being bowled. The tail failed to wag for the Grannies with a few ducks to follow leaving the final score a respectable 131 all out. A shout out to S Hungin and M Williams making their Grannies debuts, both unfortunately contributing with ducks, as well as the ever present Mike Fernie.

A large crowd had gathered to witness the end of a match played in great spirits and both teams came together for a drink after the game.
