Match report
For the first time since 2014 the Grannies managed to conjure up a win vs The Griffin. Both Captains were very eager to play despite the forbidding overhead conditions and the damp track. In an early indication that the deck was unlikely to favour graceful stroke play, the coin toss had to be carried out twice as the £2 coin initially landed on its side and stuck in the square ! Second time round “The General” aka David Pullan won the toss and inserted the Grannies. Going was tough, not just due to the damp conditions, but also accurate early bowling and the long grass in the outfield. Ben Hope curtailed his usual aggressive style and adjusted well to the slow conditions. While Amato and Divito came and went cheaply, Harvey Park arrived and provided excellent support. The 2 batted throughout the rest of the innings in a partnership worth 132 in 25 overs as the Grannies finished on 154-2. Park’s considered 39* was a perfect foil to Hope as he went through the gears ending up on an excellent 91*. On any other day, on any other wicket that was a century.
Tea was taken at 35 overs and what a pleasure it was to receive individual tea boxes rather than the BYO Happy Shopper curled up egg & cress catastrophes that we have become used to in this dull COVID world. Well played all at The Griffin for those !
In reply the redoubtable Pullan, alongside Charlie Myrtle struggled to deal with the accuracy of Grannies opening pair of Richard Wade and Rob Park. So much so that after 10 overs The Griffin had limped to the rather remarkable score of 4 for 3 ! Wade finished with the tremendous figures of 5-4-2-1 & Park not far behind on 5-3-1-3. A change of bowling took some pressure off the home side and with Miles Rothery (47) batting well, managed to make some form of recovery. That changed when Amato (2-17) was introduced to bowl his wily off breaks. He took a couple of wickets alongside a very sharp catch at first slip off Stone. Wickets continued to fall & the game was finished off at 127 in the 34th over by Stanners as the clouds loomed large once more. There was little doubt that the Grannies benefited from there only being 1 Pullan in the team. That said, the away team’s bowling attack would have been a handful for most opposition. This was typified by the youngsters Jamie Dare (2-17) & Ben Hope (1-7) who added pace and bite on what was a particularly unhelpful surface. The fact that Hope came on to bowl 7th change reflected the depth of the Grannies bowling attack.
Thanks must go to all those involved at Fletching CC/The Griffin. Many teams would have called off the game due to the heavy showers over the previous 48 hours. As it was The Grannies recorded a long overdue win against their old foes.
