Match report
Dusters 131-5, Grannies 135-2
The Dusters match has developed its own rhythm in recent years. The Grannies elect to bat first, score a very respectable total and then take to the field only to watch the cricket staff knock off the runs with overs to spare, whilst preparing an excellent BBQ. What a difference a year makes.
Char-grilled burgers are well known to be ‘vectors of transmission’ and therefore…no BBQ. Seizing the opportunity, the Grannies inserted the opposition for the first time ever, and then proceeded to bowl really rather well. Olly Butler removed their danger man in the first over, and a very tidy opening partnership with Peter S-W put the shackles on from the start. Wickets weren’t falling, but neither were the Dusters cutting loose. At 67 for 1 off 10 the match was well poised. Rory Bethwaite and Michael S-W kept the brakes on, and the Dusters never managed to accelerate, finishing on 131 for 5.
The Dulwich pitch is generally a road, and thus Sean Keaton and Mark de St Croix did what they both usually do and retired for rapid but elegant 30s. At 89-0 after 10 overs, even a Grannies collapse looked unlikely and thus it proved. Kit S-W and Ed Warner saw us home, for the loss of only 2 wickets. A rare victory of late in this fixture, but most importantly a very welcome return to the College. The BBQ was sorely missed, but it will return. And so, I suspect, will the Dusters.
