Match report
It has been said, admittedly not universally, that you can't have too many barristers. Well, on this occasion, though having a lot - 8, to be precise - the Grannies didn't have enough, or enough to save them.
On a warm sunny day Stanners won the toss for the Grannies in this 35-over match, and elected to bat. An unfamiliar opening attack of Andrew de Mestre and Jas Sanghera kept things tight, aided by a slow outfield. Big Jim kept the score-board ticking over, but wickets fell with regularity at the other end. When the big beacon himself bowed out, for 39, stumped, the decline of the innings turned near terminal. Jamie Williams managed 20*. Gordon Lee, a centurion in living memory - certainly in his - but batting here at a lowly 10, was also not out, for 12, when the innings closed with the Grannies on 120 for 8. The pick of the bowlers was Sanghera, turning his off-breaks a mile, who might well have had more than the 2 wickets he actually secured. Happily Jas has agreed to play some games for the Grannies, and I see wickets and runs aplenty for him in a long and distinguished Grannies career.
In reply the Bar advanced to their modest target at some pace. AdM, opening the batting as well as the bowling, tucked in to the tune of 33 and Skipper Jay Stockham snared 29 of his own with some ease. Within the ranks of the bowlers there was joy for GLee, Nad Ahmad and Darren Almeida in picking up the prized wickets of AdM, Stockham and Q Newcomb respectively, but ultimately these were small consolations for the team's defeat after 23.4 overs by 6 wickets.
