Match report
On a blustery May afternoon in West Sussex, a strong Goodwood CC XI welcomed a Grannies side eager to capture some early season form.
The Goodwood Estate isn't the most local match on the Grannies fixture card, but with its thatched club house, lush outfield and Grade I listed country house on the horizon it's a wonderful place to play Cricket.
On the same horizon, a series of menacing rain clouds had threatened to cancel the match. To dodge them, we agreed a 20:20 format, won the toss and headed out to bat.
The Grannies' two Wills - Devitt (45) and Dunn (25) - batted superbly, cutting and driving us to a total of 117, which hadn't looked likely at 19 for 3 after 6 overs.
At the turn of innings, we knew we had to bowl well to be competitive. Slippery underfoot, the Grannies attack of Gibbs, Dunn, Stanners and Fernie huffed and puffed, reducing the hosts to 77 for 3 after 8 overs. Fuelled by one too many free hits and some good knocks from their top order (29, 47*, 21*), our economy rate eventually caught up with us, and Goodwood CC knocked off the 117 target in the 16th over.
The post match beer - the first many of us had enjoyed in daylight for some time - helped lift the Grannies' spirits and before we were tempted into too many drinks we jumped in our cars and drove back home happy to have caught up with Grannies buddies and with a few overs under our belts.

A good ground that offers both a competitive game and a cracking tea. And it's an afternoon game, so nice and quick!
