Fri May 7th Charlie Warner wins the coveted rocking chair

Match report

The arctic conditions of the previous days had moved away and Goodwood's Downland course was bathed in sunshine with spectacular views across to the Isle of Wight. A team of 12 veteran Grannies (Sam Tod and Tony Russell excepted) and 4 buggies (shunned by our Chairman, Tutty, Sam and Tony) gathered together for the first time in 12 months, permitted by a relaxation of the COVID rules. Early excuses were plentiful, none more so than from Creff, who hobbled onto the first tee with dried blood on his left ear, having fallen over the night before under the influence of a Russell bottle or two. We hardly dared look as he teed off only to see the ball heading straight for the hole. A miraculous hole in one was on everyone's lips, but thankfully it missed the pin by millimetres and it was downhill thereafter.

Five hours later we sat down in a marquee to a crab rarebit, gammon eggs and chips and a lemon posset. No one left without a prize of suspect suitability, but the key prizes were distributed as follows:

* The rocking chair for the best score with 38 points went to Charlie Warner, who claims never to have won a golf match.
* The best team prize went to Creffield, Draff, Hamilton and Warner with 109 points.
* The longest drive was won by Sam Tod - a case of youthful vigour.
* Nearest the pin went to Gerald Slocock - a case of years of experience and native cunning.
* The most outrageous shot was chalked up by our Chairman earning him cod liver oil pills, but on reflection I think the prize should have gone to Mike Fernie for a drive of three yards!

It was altogether a fun day as stories of conquest and yesteryear got taller and taller.
