Result - Hampshire Hogs

Sun May 2nd The Grannies lose by 82 runs

Match report

Hampshire Hogs: 230-3 (47 overs)
Grannies: 148 a.o. (35.3 overs)

It was a familiar tale as the Grannies, well placed at half-time (copyright Bob Percival), couldn't quite put together the batting performance necessary to down the youthful Hogs.
It all started so well as nearly the whole XI was present and correct in leafy Hampshire with 20 minutes to the start. After the Hogs won the toss and chose to bat, Dan Burton got us off to the perfect start, claiming a wicket in his first over with an unplayable in-swinging Yorker (1-1). With Deni Matthews, making his debut as a Grannie, steady from the other end, the Grannies kept the Hogs in check. Darren Almeida and Jono Garforth then bowled fine, if luckless, spells until Darren persuaded the Hogs' number three to try one sweep too many (75-2). Jono in particular was very unlucky, beating the bat on numerous occasions. After two exploratory overs from Mike Fernie, the Hogs lunched on 121-2 from 30 overs, steady if unspectacular progress on a flat pitch and fast outfield.
After lunch, the Hogs' opener, Kelly, progressed to his usual century against the Grannies and reclaimed the title as the highest run-scorer in Hogs history before Andrew de Mestre had him expertly stumped by Bob P - the batter may have missed it on purpose! (180-3). That was the end of the wickets for the Grannies as the Hogs accumulated a further 50 before what seemed to be a sporting declaration at 230-3.
The Grannies needed to score at about 5 an over to get the win. Although Sam Stockwell went early (18-1), JBS and Tom Hoskyns batted solidly taking the Grannies to 67-1 on the cusp of tea. Unfortunately, having hit one magnificent straight six, JBS was undone by a non-spinning spinner, two balls before tea for 26.
After tea, the Grannies batting rather fell away with only Tom (27) and Jono (26) able to get going. Although Deni held up an end, wickets fell regularly and a flurry of LBWs hastened the Grannies to defeat. Darren and Bob were particularly aggrieved with theirs and the consensus on the boundary was that the umpires were keen to get back home for the finale of Line of Duty.
A convivial beer in the evening sunshine softened the defeat, and we consoled ourselves with the fact that we had left room for improvement. It's never a good idea to peak too early.
