Match report
The Grannies arrived at Tilford with cautious optimism, hunting the first win of a rather curtailed and strange season against unknown opposition at a beautiful ground. The toss was safely negotiated and given the absurd heat the opposition were asked to take the field much to the delight of the Grannies players – one even commenting that it was enough to win the champagne moment of the day before a ball had been bowled!
Jim and Scottie got the innings off to a confident start just after 2pm, but once Jim fell for a fluent 23, the run rate slowed and a couple of quick wickets left the Grannies 62 for 3 after 18 overs. Some impetus came from the middle order of Sam Tod (21 – out caught giving catching practice to the same fielder having been dropped the ball before) and Billie Maisey (28 - chipping back to the captain) accompanying a very solid knock from Scottie (71) anchoring the innings. The opening bowlers had been seen off after 17 overs in scorching heat and we were 155 for 5, still some way off a defendable total despite it fast approaching the “agreed” change of innings time. Having only faced 27 overs in over 2 hours we were facing the prospect of bowling 40+ to them. We continued to bat and finally posted a defendable total of 214 for 9 just before 5pm.
The Grannies confidently took the field with a pacey opening pair of Billy Maisey and Jamie Dare and this was boosted by the early wicket of their opener. However, this was short lived and suddenly Tiford were 110+ and racing towards our target with two set batsmen reaching 50. The drinks and hand sanitisation break brought the breakthrough and Matt Siebert’s slow spin then wrecked havoc with the middle order (4 – 26 from 6 overs). A brief cameo from the opposition captain, including 3 sixes in a row, threatened to take the game away from us with plenty of overs to spare, but a run out and the return of Jamie Dare wrapped up their innings at 173.
Both teams retired to the pub overlooking the green for some welcome post match refreshment and talk of reconvening next season. A thoroughly enjoyable game of cricket against very friendly opposition and a first win of the season for the Grannies was in the bag!
