Match report

The Grannies arrived at the beautiful setting of the HAC in The City more in hope than expectation; a few last minute injury woes meant that we were indebted to James Richards for persuading a colleague to step in at the last minute to provide a full contingent.

Having called correctly, the Grannies elected to bowl first in the hope that they could contain HAC’s notoriously strong batting line up for long enough to prompt a reachable declaration. On a wicket that played a bit more two-paced than usual, Grannies’ opening pairing of Kane and Don kept things tight; Kane getting the deserved breakthrough by bowling HAC’s opener towards the end of a miserly spell. The first change pairing of Hobbiss and Gibbons picked up where these two left off - Hobbiss’ nagging accuracy complementing Gibbons’ extremely tempting slow right arm to leave HAC stuttering on 86-6. A fine 50 from HAC’s captain Casey brought them up to a competitive total, and despite a hostile spell of ‘heavy balls’ from the returning Joe Huxley the HAC declared on 195-8.

In reply, the Grannies lost Wood early but the chase was beginning to look a formality with the former Worcester College pairing of Huxley and Hobbiss at the crease. The duo eased us into the 80s before a Grannies collapse straight out of the top drawer - 4 wickets lost for 5 runs scored. Thereafter saw a period of consolidation through debutants Murray and Pollitt; the former showing the kind of solidity often demonstrated in his tackles on the hockey pitch, and the latter reeling off a collection of shots evidently honed on the sands of Borth beach. Both departed having got the Grannies within touching distance, but despite a late flurry from Kane (16 off 8 balls) and Gibbons we came up 15 runs short.

Thanks to all for another cracking afternoon, and to our HAC hosts for their usual excellent hospitality and a sporting declaration. Anyone interested in playing this fixture next year please email [email protected].
