Match report
As we always seem to, in this 35-over contest, we fielded first and threatened to roll Stone over. Dan Burton bowled beautifully for no reward (except praise in these pages...), his first 5 overs going for 7 and his 7 in all going for 19. Dick Saunders, a veteran of the Pakistan trip, bowled tidily and got a wicket, with figures ultimately of 1-45 - to go with a blinding catch - and Eddie Erith (also on debut), Ed G-H and Jay Stockham, the latter pressed somewhat unwillingly into extended service, enjoyed decent spells, recording stats of 2-52, 1-53 and 2-41 respectively. However...we allowed 142-5 after 23 overs to become 238-6 by the conclusion and the prospect of chasing that down was on any view daunting.
As ever Stone had bowlers to complement their highly competent batsmen, and Tom Hoskyns and Jay found the early going tough. Happily, however, for 10 overs or so Stone dropped everything going, and soon the batsmen found their early season feet, and flowing stroke-play ensued, Jay going for 42 and Tom for a sometimes imperious 64. We then I fear subsided. Ed G-H fell cheaply trying to up the pace. Chris Stephenson did likewise, having promised a good deal on his return from the wilderness. The only man to put any sort of show on was the evergreen (in more senses than one) Paul Stewart, who would have carried his bat for 23, but for selfish running by your scribe.
And so it was: though it didn't feel like it, we had lost by the wide margin of 82 runs.
I need hardly tell you the ground was a picture; the tea one of THE GREAT TREATS; and the Stone players as usual a joy to play against (if only they didn't keep winning...)
