Sun Sep 17th Grannies lose by 25 in high scoring 40-over match

Match report

On a fine September afternoon the Grannies assembled in good time to participate in a special luncheon put on by the home team to thank their vice-presidents. On being inserted Stone started strongly, as they always do, with a couple of good league players at the crease. Breaking the stand was always going to be difficult, and it took a magnificent catch by the aged match manager to remove the key player. He was however replaced by something similar, and the Grannies continued to take a pounding despite some tight bowling by messrs Toby Savage, Alex Stone and Neal Pearce. The introduction of the subtle spin of Adam Newton however produced three relatively quick wickets and this, coupled with a good spell of swing from Mike Bellhouse, helped to limit Stone to a score of 259, a tough target that might have been even greater.
The Grannies innings started brightly, with Jamie Williams and Steve Slaughter making 39 and 43 respectively. A classy 40 from Bellhouse and 37 from Savage helped the score along, but no-one could manage the big innings required, and in the end we succumbed at 234, 25 runs short of target.
