Match report

The Grannies arrived at Stonegate to find the Rascals in a state of consternation. Their tenants Mayfield CC appeared to have left a hose on an area of the square meaning that one end of the wicket was sodden. After some discussion and a chat with the umpire it was decided to play a 25 over game and to bowl from one end of the pitch only.
The Grannies made a good start with Justus and Pari keeping it tight. Pari broke the opening partnership taking two wickets in an over including tidy catches by Will Finn and Jim Davis and then Justus added a third. The Rascals number 4 started swinging hard at the ball and completely missing but eventually started to connect with the ball ominously. Ben Shipley and Charlie Ellis took over the bowling and did their best to keep things tight but although in the air the ball would not go to hand. Duncan Ellis and Will Snowden then took over and Duncan managed to weedle out a couple of batsman but the number 4 progresses imperiously to 105 not out. He was put down a couple of time on the boundary but only late on and it was an impressive knock. The Rascals finished with 177 for 5 off their 25 overs, a decent total but one we felt we could chase if one or two of our batsmen could get in and get going.
After a decent tea provided by the Grigson family the Grannies started slowly with Ellis and Bailey working hard before Bailey was removed by a fantastic one handed diving catch by Paul Ross at midwicket. Duncan Ellis, Gardiner-Hill and Davis all worked hard but struggled to find any fluency against some dogged bowling. Davis fell to a fantastic diving catch in the outfield by their century maker and although Snowden, Charlie Ellis, Paul Strange, Will Finn and Ben Shipley all tried hard we just could not get going and get up to the rate needed and finished meekly on 118 for 7.
A disappointing finish to a good game. The Grannies have won the last 4 games including 2016 by 126 runs in a 35 over game so it was interesting to be treated to a taste of our own medicine!! Thanks to the Rascals for a fun game and to the Grannies for playing and particularly to Messrs Finn and Ellis for bringing along the next generation.
