Result - Stragglers of Asia

Sun May 15th Grannies win by 10 runs

Match report

The match with the Stragglers continued in the same good-natured vein of recent years with a mixture of highest quality (they had a county player and someone with a South African accent, who looked like he should have been) to the more "minor" county standard that we expect these days from the Grannies.

Grannies lost the toss and were put into bat. The openers went cheaply, and though Stephen Hornsby scored a brisk 18, we were suddenly 40 for 2 and looking a bit rocky. Kamal Chhibber (100 not out) and Hugo Llewelyn (106) then proceeded to put on 194 for the third wicket (is this a Grannies record?), which restored equanimity and took us to 300 for 5 from 55 overs. The only other incident of the innings was that Llewelyn then went on as substitute fielder for the Stragglers after batting and caught Pete Weissman out at deep long on for a spritely 28, which Wiessman took in surprisingly good humour!

The Stragglers started well with Matthew Shales (139) and Duncan Bradshaw (69) making a serious dent in the run chase. Grannies bowlers struggled a bit on the very decent track, against first class opposition but standouts were Chhibber (he must be fit - he also took four searing catches), Mike Fernie and Gerald "of Bails" Slocock. It all came down to the last wicket with the Stragglers needing 20 off 7 overs. Shales was still going strong until he was well caught at deep long off by Chhibber to seal the match for the Grannies by 10 runs. A really pleasing result all told.
