Result - Rascals

Sun May 8th Grannies win by 124 runs

Match report

On a beautiful early summer's day with very dry conditions at the ground the Grannies were put in in a 35 over game and produced one of the best Grannies batting performances the captain has seen scoring 358 for 5 in their overs. R Snowden started well and scored 51 (5x4s, 2x6s to get to 50) leaving the Grannies at 108 for 1 after 14 overs. Charles Bailey and Jonny Morris continued to take the attack to the Rascals before Jonny was bowled by Kit Ross in the 20th over for 27 (173 for 2). Bailey and Gardiner-Hill then set about the Rascals attack with relish with Bailey moving swiftly to his hundred (his first since 1995!) before being stumped for 108 (11x4s, 6x6s) (260 for 3 in 27th over) . Gardiner-Hill was joined by candidate Jim Davis who played some sweet shots, Gardiner-Hill was stumped in the 29th over for a typically belligerent 73 (8x4s, 5x6s). Davis (41*) and Will Snowden (30) continued to attack hard with Gundry (2*) doing a good job giving Davis the strike at the end. The Grannies were helped by a few dropped catches but the batting was fantastic with an incredible display of clean hitting throughout the top order.

The Rascals were anything but downhearted and started well with a bit of help from a few dropped catches. Opening bowlers Van Lare and Shipley (who was unlucky to miss out on a wicket as a result of a few drops) started well but the 50 came up pretty quickly until the captain pulled off a miraculous one handed diving catch at short midwicket to take a well struck pull shot an inch from the ground to remove the dangerous looking Cannety-Clarke off Van Lare. After a few more lusty blows Van Lare (3 for 35) then removed P. Keeling for 39 and P. Ross for 7 to good catches from Finn behind the wicket and Morris respectively.

The Rascals continued to lose wickets pretty regularly (about every 25 runs according to Justus) and with Griffiths (2 for 23) and Gundry (1 for 50) bowled tidily in the middle overs the size of the Grannies total began to look out of reach. Good catches from Bailey, Gardiner-Hill (no trumpet blowing about the athleticism required for a second full length diving catch - I can certainly feel it today!) and Griffiths removed 3 more leaving the Rascals with 234 for 8 off their 35 overs. A score that would normally get them pretty close or over the line but which was well short after the Grannies fantastic batting performance.

Thanks to the Rascals for a great game, a good tea and a lot of support in fantastic sunshine. Thanks also to Toby, Justus and Charles (and others) for fielding at the bottom of the slope to great effect a long way from the wicket!
