Sun May 1st Grannies lost by 53 runs

Match report

Grannies lost by 53 runs
Hogs 206 for 5 from 38 overs
153 for 10 from 29 overs

On a warm but blustery day in early May a collection of the new and (old) established Grannies assembled in Warnford to play the Hampshire Hogs. The season opener had been reduced to an afternoon game to help both sides raise a full' team. This did not mean that we missed an excellent lunch, we just had it before any cricket commenced.

Having been lent 2 Hogs to bolster the Grannies ranks, our 10 soon become 11 with our 5th debutant in the form of young Oliver Baldey (age 12), would he outperform is Father? Following the modern ways, no toss was needed as the captains agreed the Hogs would bat first. Senior opening bowler Stanners declined to choose an end so it was left to James Tod and Jono Garforth to open the bowling. Both produced excellent opening spells, with Jono bowling 5 maidens in a row and Toddy busy removing the oppo skipper (being caught by a player he had lent us ) and the Hogs number 3. All was looking good for the Grannies with the Hogs top 3 back in the pavilion and the scoreboard reading 18 for 3 at the end of the 14th over, Stanners had opened with a maiden also. Unfortunately this would be the last time the Grannies were ahead.

Slowly the Hogs recovery began, although it didnt stop Stanners opening his account for the season. Youthful(ish) spin was tried in the form of debutant Will (only mother calls me William) Jerabek and then the more senior Mike Fernie, the latter still just having the pace to remove the bails. With the Hogs score growing the Grannies turned to more youth in the form of 12 year old Oliver Baldey. The young man showed excellent control and should have been rewarded with a first Grannies wicket if Dad (yes his father) hadnt missed a stumping chance. However two things I am sure of is that Olivers first Grannies wicket will not be far away and that will not be the last time his father fumbles one off his bowling.

Having survived his Baldey experience, Low went on to complete a patent and watchful century for the Hogs, while Gabb produced a slight faster 50. The Hogs declared on 206 for 5 from 38 overs. Time for Tea

The Grannies decided to open with their other Father & Son combination, in the form of the 2 player the Hogs and lent us, Colin & Dom Oluton. Unfortunately the Hogs opening bowlers were even less generous than the Grannies had been and we soon found ourselves 15 for 4 at the end of the 7th over. Both openers had departed as well as Baldey (Snr) and 5th debutant Alex Stone both without troubling the scorer. It was left to skipper Scott and Eastern Aussie Jono Garforth to rebuild, the latter choosing to do so by seeing how many times he could be dropped before he reached double figures, the former choosing to give catching practice to deep square once he had reached double figures. Jono held firm but none of us were able to stay with him for long, although it had nothing to do with not wanting to be near an Eastern Aussie (I think that is the suburb he is from, they all sound the same to me). Oli Baldey failed to outscore his father, much to 9 other players disappointment and a succession of ducks continued to make a mess of the Grannies run chase. Although we were just able to nurse Jono to an excellent 103 not out before we were dismissed for 153

The result by no means detracted from an excellent and enjoyable game as always against the Hogs and we will return next year with a stronger team
