Result - St Paul's 'All Stars' (T20)

Wed May 20th Grannies win by 42 runs

Match report

This fun fixture usually sees a ramble of Grannies players failing to make the sharp start time enforced by the masters of St Pauls common room. This year bucked the trend however as a youthful Grannies side were raring to go at 6pm looking to set the pace for the 20/20 bash.

This momentum was somewhat halted as the skipper lost the toss, the Grannies were asked to bat and Walford and Arbee got off to a steady but rather rusty start. St Pauls began to turn the screw as their gap year masters bowled a tight line making runs difficult to come by. As time ticked by, both opening batsmen looked to hit out which caused the loss of a quick couple of wickets and produced some nervous looks back in the dressing room as the Grannies wobbled to 50-2 off 10 overs.

Cometh the hour, cometh the men as de St Croix and Bourne made their way to the wicket. After a few careful overs of nibbling singles, both players began to find their feet and started to plunder some wayward bowling with shots all over the wicket. With fielders now hugging the boundary ropes, de St Croix decided the only way to clear the danger was aerially and the final few overs saw maximums raining from both players who ended up on 78* (de St Croix) and 48* (Bourne) ensuring the Grannies posted a very respectable 168-2 after 20 overs.

Tails up, the Grannies took to the field armed with a pink ball as light began to fade. The sight of South African John Davies racing in and bowling fast and straight down the hill began to shake up the openers whilst Bellhouse complimented at the other end with a good line and some swing. St Pauls young batsmen held firm though and at 72-0 after 10 overs the game was finely poised.

Bourne and J.Warner were called to the fore and their darting medium pace and off spin began to frustrate the batsmen and the breakthrough came when Warner coaxed a big swing to the boundary and brother in law Stocker made a safe catch to keep harmony over family Christmas. Bourne then bowled an excellent three over spell producing four wickets, all of them catches that were well held in the confident outfield.

The last threat was extinguished when the returning Bellhouse had the danger opener caught behind for 60 and the final few overs were seen out as St Pauls ended on 126-6 resulting in the first Grannies victory of the season and giving enough time for some enjoyable beers with the welcoming St Pauls staff.
