Sun Aug 17th Grannies 224 vs. Queries 225 - Final Ball Loss!

Match report

An amazing day ended with the Grannies needing 17 runs from the final 4 overs of the match, with 3 wickets in hand. A classy 13 from Robin Rogers at number 8 saw the Grannies to within 7 runs of the target with 2 overs to go. Bob Percival added a single; and a timely four byes from the opening quick bowler saw us needing just 2 to win from the final over, with two wickets in hand.

Four dot balls did nothing to ease the pressure; Bob succumbed to the penultimate ball, and Mike Fernie got his pad in the way of a straight-un on the final delivery of the match to finally turn the game in favour of the home side!

Earlier in the day, the first 45 minutes of the game were lost to the weather; and an agreed toss saw the Queries bat first and race away at 4 an over a rate they maintained throughout their innings, which they declared at 225 after 47 overs. For the Grannies, Dom Ely was metronomically accurate and picked up 2 for 31 in 10 overs; Mike Fernie picked up the key wicket of the Queries Number 3, who made 88; and Tom Brierley, Martin Varghese and Dom Fry supported well and each secured wickets. However, 31 extras were conceded as some bowlers failed to hit consistent lines, and in hindsight this clearly had an impact on the result!

The Queries bowling was disciplined but offered opportunity for the Grannies batsmen to cash in periodically in their after-tea reply. Matt Gullick and James Philpott saw us off to a steady start before Gullick was caught behind and Philpott the victim of a moment of run-out confusion with James Brierley, who was subsequently also dismissed for 12. Tom Brierley batted well for 31 but was stumped off the Queries specialist lob bowler, Ninian MacGregor.

At 110 for 4 from 24 overs the Grannies innings was well-paced but well into the middle order; a partnership of 90 between the two Doms in just 15 overs put us right back in contention before Fry ran Ely out for 48 and then, overcome with guilt and grief, skied one to mid-on for 69.

This was a superb game on any measure; the track played superbly given the mornings weather; the outfield was fast (and large!); lunch and tea were generous and delicious in equal measure. Many thanks to those taking part and we look forward to an equally enthralling day next year.
