Match report

The Grannies team for the BB's game was full of promise and, on paper, looked unbeatable. Monty has said this week "the Ryder Cup is not played on paper" and, unfortunately for the Grannies on that day in August, nor is cricket.

On a glorious day with Torry Hill looking its best the Skipper, Newcomb, won what he thought was a good toss to win and chose to bat. The BB's bowlers, however, bowled with discipline on a wicket which provided them with some unexpected assistance from time to time. Opener E Prest impressed in particular and, with his opening partner F Maidens (who on the day bowled none), quickly frustrated flashing Caldwell (too used to 20/20 since his big money move to the Battersea Bash) and Newcomb out.

Whilst the likes of Harry Yeates can count themselves genuinely unlikely with their dismissal unfortunately none of the Grannies applied the concentration and patience that was required against the strong BB's bowling attack. Ultimately the Grannies succumbed after reaching 114 in 34 over which, so went the conversation during a typically fine lunch "over the road", was not as hopeless as it seemed "on that wicket".

Well, it was "on that wicket" (which clearly flattened out almost beyond recognition over the course of the short adjournment) that the BB's came out firing in no mood to drag things out. Pyke and Smith, the openers, made light work of a Grannies attack which was never allowed to find its rhythm. Special mention should, however, go to Pari Job who bowled beautifully against two very classy batsmen and restricted them to ones and twos.

In the field the Grannies showed real spirit in the face of a masterclass in aggressive but proper batting from the BB's. When the BB's knocked off the runs in less than half of the overs batted by the Grannies (16.4 overs) the very significant silver lining was that it allowed all carte blanche to enjoy an excellent fulsome tea, knowing that their work was done.

We walked back to our cars with the sun still shining and the Grannies still, to a man, wearing a smile: it was just one of those perfect days to play cricket, with a perfect setting to play it in, and a very pleasant opposition to play it against.
