In spite of heavy rain overnight the pitch (having been covered) looked pretty good although the outfield started slow and quickened up through the game.
The Grannies lost the toss and were inserted. James Marsh and Matt Gullick started purposefully although it took them a little while to get used to a leg spinner opening the bowling. Matt Gullick hit some good shots before perishing for 45 (a pretty good return having been locked out of his room in the local pub by his roommate and had resorted to sleeping in his car). Jonny Morris was unfortunate to be bowled around his legs by one that spun for 0. Ed Gardiner-Hill started scratchily but having had a bit of luck started to take the attack to BEWCC and the Grannies lunched well only two wickets down. Ed and James continued to score quickly after the break and had added 101 before Ed was bowled for 59. Simon Baldey was unlucky to be removed by an interesting LBW decision (large stride and apparently a bit of bat) for 0, Billy Maisey (55) then came in and added another 100 partnership with James as they both smote the ball to all parts. The captain declared just before half time with the score on 299 when James fell for c.117 leaving Pari Job 4*.
After a quick turnaround Mike Traill opened up and was unfortunate to feel a niggle in his side early on having started positively. Pari Job opened the other end and as usual bowled a beautiful line which together with an aggressive field made it very hard for the batsmen to score quickly. Billy Maisey bowled a hostile spell from the other end and eventually received his reward when the ball before tea bowled their dangerous left handed opener for 42 (there may have been a bit of anger in the delivery as Billy wasn't very happy with the resetting of the field by the captain or with having been hit for 4 two balls in a row!!). After tea runs continued to be very hard to come by with Billy (13-1-42-1) and Pari (13-5-37-2)bowling tightly and Pari eventually received his reward with two wickets in one over. BEWCC shut up shop with around 30 overs to go and Jay Brinsmead-Stockham batted with incredible patience against Staniforth(8-3-8-2, David Percival (5-1-24-0) and Morris. Staniforth in particular bowled with his usual control and guile and was unlucky not to get more wickets. Wickets continued to fall relatively regularly at the other end but not fast enough to get the Grannies to the win. Jay was eventually bowled for 59 with 2 overs to go having left an Ed Gardiner-Hill dolly drop which turned all of 2 inches. Unfortunately the Grannies could not dislodge the remaining batsmen and in spite of having bowled 4 more overs than BEWCC we could not finish the job.
A great game and an impressive performance by the Grannies in the field and with the bat (two one hundred partnerships) but no cherry on top. Suffice it to say that there is no way that we could have held out in the way that BEWCC did but fair play to them for showing tremendous patience.
