Result - Odiham and Greywell CC

Sat Sep 10th Grannies lost by 4 wickets

Match report

In time honoured tradition the Grannies and Odiham conjured up (under leaden skies) another entertaining game. Having lost the toss and been inserted we managed a respectable start as Billy and Granny virgin, Andy Minshaw, took advantage of any width. Miinshaw raced to a useful 33 before holing out. It was there that the problems started. While Billy made hay at one end, the rest of us found that we were batting in glue and were lucky to get off the mark (4 ducks). The net result was that the last 8 batsmen contributed a princely 13 runs, of which Dom Ely got 9 ! It was that bad. Billy remaine dthe saving grace and disappointingly our inept batting prevented our hero from scoring a well deserved century (98* out of 152 all out !).

Interestingly there were no extras in our total. Needless to say 1 ball into their innings and we had broken that duck as Stanners beamed their opener. Apparently he slipped. Off a shorter run however, both Dom Ely & Stanners got the ball to move around and wickets started to fall. A regular rotation of the bowling saw Mssrs Ely, Stanners, Billy, Siebert & Hill all chip away at the Odiham line up. Sadly we were 50 odd runs short and our plight was dutifully summer up as (Patrick) Cobb floated one up drawing the number 8 down the track. His hack missed the ball but the flight and guile was such that he had time aplenty to meander back into his crease and avoid the stumping.

While the game started in unrelenting drizzle, it finished in bright sunshine, fully justifying Jeremy Wynne's decision to wear his panama at first slip. Sadly the outcome was never really in doubt despite our young shavers heroics leading to a first defeat in 3-4 years.

Match info

An end of season Grannies favourite...we've had mixed results against Odiham and Greywell which rather depends on whether they field a team of youth and grey hair or a team including a sprinkling of their 1st team. Always enjoyed by the Grannies the mixture of a good pitch, welcoming oppo plus a bar make this an excellent way to see off the season.
