Result - Scottish Tour -Lord Cornwallis' XI

Fri Aug 26th Grannies lost by 50 runs

Match report

The first game of the Grannies tour of Scotland was played against Lord Cornwallis' XI at Comrie just outside Perth. The Grannies team came by plane, train and car and more or less arrived on time. Even Newton, post writing off his hire car, was ready and waiting. Draffan was a little late due to his fish pie being prepared rather slowly over lunch, but a 40 over a side game duly started at 2.30pm.

Grannies bowled well and restricted the opposition in the first 30 overs (including former England ladies batsman Claire Taylor), but a fine innings by the son of the Lord, making 105 not out carried the opposition to 204 off their 40 overs. On a slow (some would say rather pudding-like pitch) this was always going to be a competitive score.

So it proved. Draffan and Newton batting sensibly at first got Grannies off to a solid start, but it was always going to be hard to force the pace and after we reached the 100 mark off 30 overs, a flurry of wickets fell as successive batsmen tried to move the score forward. Cross batted shots proved unwise as multiple players were caught off the slow pitch. In the end a few local ringers hit some lusty blows and got us to 150 for 8 by the close. Would have been a draw in declaration format, but we were probably second best. Followed up by a few very enjoyable pints at the local pub and an excellent chilli con carne chez Mike Bluett. The Chairman will report on the second tour game played against the 40 Club.
