Match report

The Grannies, fielding one of the strongest fast bowling attacks we have - Stringer, Hamilton, Gibbs, Hawes and the two Yeates boys - won the toss and elected to bowl, which we did extremely tightly. After 32 overs the HAC had made 51 runs, but for the loss of only two wickets - one to Stringer and a brilliant direct hit run out to Ben Yeates, as the pitch was slow and true (typical, given our attack!). Consequently having no other slow bowlers, Hugo Llewelyn, skipper for the game, reluctantly put himself on to bowl and rather surprisingly ended up with 6 - 27 off 10 overs (including a maiden, which is almost more improbable!). Some excellent keeping by Adam Parkinson, with a catch and a stumping, contributed to this tally. HAC were thus all out for 165, and the Grannies had 50 overs to get them.

Jay Stockam and Adam Parkinson opened up with a solid 50 partnership, before both were out (Jay made 37), and the HAC tightened up their bowling making it difficult to score. Tom Hamilton however made 55 before being stumped, and at 140 for 6 the match looked in control...

The Grannies however are capable of extreme performances at any part of a game, and suddenly the tail crumbled, so that the 9th wicket fell with the scores level. Hugo, who had put everyone else in to bat ahead of him, came in at number 11, tried to score the winning run off his first ball and was promptly caught behind for 0!

The match was therefore a tie, but fortunately the Grannies soon recovered from the shock of not winning as we should have, and we retired to the pub with the opposition for a beer.

A terrific game altogether and one full of admirable Grannies' traits and stoicism!
