Result - Rascals

Sat May 14th Grannies win by 67 runs

Match report

On a beautiful day in Stonegate the Grannies turned up with 9 and one on the way (unfortunately did not materialise!). A 35 over game was agreed with the customary late start and the Grannies won the toss and decided to bat (not much option really with only 9!).
Finn and Newcomb started very well and breezed along at 6 an over with Newcomb causing chaos by requiring a runner having torn a calf muscle. They had put on 80ish when Finn was unlucky to be out LBW for a breezy 44 bring candidate Charles Bailey to the wicket. He settled in quickly and knocked off a quick 26 before charging a good ball and being bowled. The captain came to the pitch and with Newcomb playing a steady hand proceeded to hit the ball all over the park (provided it was leg side) with some coming off the middle. Assisted by Newcomb (44), Ben Yeates (26), Gundry (4 - brutally run out by the captain in the last over) and James Sibree (5*) the captain (88*) took the total to 256 off the 35 overs.
The Grannies took the field with some trepidation with only 9 men and one of those with a torn calf muscle. The mood brightened as James Sibree's first ball was an unplayable lifter gloved to Finn behind the stumps by the Rascals' captain. Ben Yeates at the other end bowled some good balls and soon the Rascals were 15 for 3 with dangerman Grigson back in the hutch. After a slightly wild first over Sibree found his rhythm and was getting the ball to move up the famed Stonegate hill. The Grannies managed to keep things tight despite the lack of numbers and wickets continued to fall with Clifton at no6 smacking the ball around with little support. The wickets were share around as Yeates, Sibree and Gardiner-Hill took 2 each and Bailey, Rayer and Gundry 1 apiece with the Rascals eventually finishing on 189 all out. Special mention should be given to Quentin Newcomb who took 3 catches in spite of his torn calf muscle (fortunately all straight at him)!
The game was played in a great spirit and I think everyone went home with a smile on their face.
