Result - Bar of England and Wales

Sat May 7th Grannies win by 72 in 35-over season-opener

Match report

The seasons 35-overs-a-side pipe-opener saw the Grannies battling with the Bar side preparing to take on all-comers at Lawyers Cricket World Cup 3 in Barbados in August.
After early setbacks batting first the Grannies re-grouped. Charles Walford scored 23. The Caldwell brothers, James and Will putting bottom into their stroke-making as if blessed like a certain fellow Marlburienne - then tore into the attack scoring 69 and 71 respectively. Greg Chapman hit a rapid 18. Ben Yeates hit the strike of the day down the throat of a very long long-on and Gibbs and Percival consolidated things bringing the total to a tidy 218.
The Bars reply was robust, Matt Gullick and Jay Stockham (both also Grannies) notching 55 and 40 respectively, the former batting with rather more fluency and oomph, Stockhams preparations, blamed on a curtailed court appearance and a thirsty leader, having been less than perfect. One end however was most effectively tied up by Tom Gibbs (7-0-14-0) and the batsmen took liberties at the other, the beneficiaries being Walford with 5 for 50 off 8 and Chapman with 2 for 34 off 7, all bar one bowled, a statistic confirming that they bowled well too.
In the end the Bar subsided leaving the Grannies winners by 72 runs.
We wish them well in the Caribbean.
