Result - Leigh

Sun Sep 12th Grannies lose by 32 runs

Match report

The season finale was played on a pleasant sunny afternoon against a reasonably strong Leigh side.
The Grannies won the toss and elected to field. A dropped slip catch allowed the Leigh openers to put together a sizeable partnership and they finished their innings on 216 for 8. The pick of the Grannies bowling was a six wicket haul by Dave Boa who bowled in tandem with Adam Newton for 25 overs of spin.
Dave Boa prevented the Leigh total from getting away from us by taking regular wickets and not allowing any significant partnerships to develop. He narrowly missed out on a hat-trick and finished his excellent contribution with figures of 51-6.
Dave Boa was ably supported by Adam Newton who obtained both spin and bounce and returned figures of 14-0-52-1.
After another sumptuous Leigh tea, the Grannies set about reaching the 217 needed for victory. John Newton departed early to a good one but the pairing of Will Finn and Greg Chapman steadied the innings with scores of 39 and 46 respectively.
A sprightly 27 from Will Snowden brought the Grannies to within sight of the Leigh total but we kept losing wickets at vital times. A late order partnership between Sean Renard (who batted determinedly for his 24) and Ashley Butterworth (14) edged the Grannies to within forty runs of the Leigh score.
Sadly, we were not able to get much closer with the last two Grannies wickets disappearing cheaply and our innings ending at 184 all out.
Despite the defeat a great day was had by all. The post match discussion in the pub concluded that the Grannies enjoyed a close game that we could have won had we been better able to develop longer lasting partnerships among our middle order.
Many thanks to Ashley Butterworth who captained the side, Will Finn for excellent wicket-keeping skills and to Leigh for their great hospitality.
