Result - St. Benedict's Masters

Thu Jun 17th Grannies win by 13 runs.

Match report

A lovely evening was spent playing St Benedict's Masters and the game produced a close and exciting finish.
The evening was enhanced by the presence of Willoughby Wynne who umpired throughout the 40 overs and told tales about the first fixtures between the two clubs going back to the mid 1960s.
The Grannies batted first and made 118-5 in their 20 overs. Jay Stockham opened the batting and produced a chanceless innings until being caught on the boundary for 47. His departure opened the way for Julian Graham to power his way to 41 not out and, thus, set the opposition the fairly competitive total of 118.
The Masters replied with determination. However, when their Minor County ringer was dismissed by a stunning catch from Frank Walden the writing was on the wall. They must put something in the tea and doughnuts for the pre match tea that agrees with Frank as he had taken another spectacular catch on his last visit to St Benedict's two years ago.
After this dismissal the game was still within St Benedicts reach but they kept losing wickets at crucial times and ended up all out 13 runs short of the Grannies total.
There was some excellent tight bowling from the Grannies with Henry Collins returning figures of 4-0-10-1, Frank Walden 4-0-21-2, Dave Boa 4-0-19-1 and Julian Graham 4-0-30-1. After his efforts with the bat, Jay Stockham, bowled 4 overs for 27 runs picking up 3 valuable wickets. The Grannies were very ably captained by Ashley Butterworth for the first time and Sean Renard kept wicket tidily in the diminishing light.
Both sides retired to The Duke of Kent after the game with everyone agreeing that the evening had been extremely well spent and looking forward to next year's rematch.
