Result - Goodwood C C

Sun Jun 6th The Grannies win by 54 runs

Match report

With the threatened rain failing to materialise, it turned out to be a good day to win the toss and bat on a Goodwood wicket with more bounce than usual. Whilst the match manager went about the business of seeing the shine off the new ball and making batting look difficult, Tim Piper eased his way to 31 before edging a good ball behind. Thankfully for the numerous spectators, the match manager soon followed Tim back to the pavilion, leaving the way clear for James Scott and Simon Baldey to provide a batting masterclass. Both lost their wicket as they looked to push the Grannies over the 200 mark, but their scores of 59 and 49 respectively turned out to be invaluable and set up a declaration at 187 for 6.

In reply, Goodwood survived a storm of fast bowling from Jon Staniforth and Grannies' debutant, Tom Gibbs. Dom Fry then came into the attack and proved unplayable, deservedly picking up a key wicket when Tim Piper decided to dive spectacularly instead of just taking two steps forward to cling on to a catch. However, it was the match manager who benefitted most from the pressure that had been applied; his local knowledge came in handy as he ran down the hill and took five of the first six wickets to fall.

Hugo Llewlyn bamboozled the limpet-like opener, with Dom exclaiming his delight whilst setting himself for the resulting catch, and Matthew Haslett (another debutant) claimed an important wicket as Goodwood (commendably) continued to attack despite the required rate having crept over 10 an over.

With 8 wickets down the shop was pretty much shut, so Tom Gibbs was brought back for a cameo and removed the Goodwood skipper. It was then left to Dom to come back and take the final wicket with the first ball of the penultimate over, finding an edge that was expertly caught by Simon Baldey at the second of three slips.

The scorebook reads:
Grannies 187 for 6 (Scott 59; Baldey 49; Piper 31)
Goodwood 133 all out (Knight 5-38; Fry 2-10 (from 8.1 overs))

Thank you to all who played for a glorious afternoon.
