Sun Sep 20th Grannies lose by 49

Match report

On a beautiful sunny afternoon the Grannies Captain won the toss and elected to field, suspecting that the pitch would play 'sticky' after two days of heavy rain. His somewhat disgruntled team, anxious to top up their tans with the last rays of the summer by relaxing on the boundary, nonetheless performed with spirit and good progress was made. Tight opening spells by Tom Gibbs (1-20)and Neal Pearce (candidate, 2-19), followed by Mike Bellhouse (2-20)and Max Fernie (1-11)kept the talented Stone team, made up mostly of league players, to a miserly run rate in what was a 40-over match. Mike Fernie (2-40) and Adam Newton (2-28)then applied the coup de grace and the Stone total of 145 seemed eminently gettable. A steady opening partnership between Lawrence Brennan (11) and Imraan Arbee (24)kept our hopes intact, but it soon became obvious that the wicket was still tricky and, apart from a stalwart performance by Max Fernie (34*), no one else managed to achieve double figures, with the Grannies subsiding to 96 all out. This was a disappointing end to the season after the previous weekend's successes, but nonetheless it was still a delight to be playing cricket on a beautiful ground in warm September sunshine.
