Sun Jul 5th Match Abandoned

Match report

With 99% of Grannies generally unable to play this fixture, a suitable number of locals were bribed and cajoled into supporting the Grannies' useless match manager in fulfilling this fixture.

The afternoon's weather was always going to be mixed; but no morning rain meant that the match manager's travel advice "proceed with caution" was eventually moved up to "game on".

Unfortunately, after no fewer than three stoppages for showers, the heavens finally opened in earnest and the game was abandoned with the "Grannies C.C" (and I use the term in its loosest sense" on a healthy 69 for 2 from 17 overs.

Many, many thanks to Robin Rogers, Mike Fernie, Martin Stringer and Will Jerabek for agreeing to play in this fixture - and in particular to Mike for his enthusiasm and optimism in continuing the search for "real Grannies" right up to the eleventh hour.

On reflection though, an obvervation: Whilst CLEARLY the whole fun and purpose of wandering cricket is to provide a format where youth ands experience can blend together and compete as equals, it is worth bearing in mind the fact that the Queries fielded ten players under the age of 25, and only one "senior pro".

For this fixture to remain competitive, we probably need to think about ways to address this - but right now, I'd put that at the back of the list of priorities and instead settle for a full Grannies XI playing tghis fixture next year.

Match info

How I wish this web-site remembered the description from last year! In short, it's a very good fixture against Wiltshire's premier wandering cricket club. We had an amazing game last year. It's played at a real club with excellent facilities.
