Match report

A series of rare events helped make this a memorable day. First of all a Grannies win, secondly Scottie arriving before the game had started and most puzzling of all, a surfeit of the fabled Old Spot ham sandwiches at the end of tea. One reason suggested for explaining 2 of the 3 events was the absence of Big Jim who was waylaid by his decision to enrol in an acrobatic cycling course in SE London. Having won the toss the Grannies chose to bowl. At 1.45 with only 6 players this was looking an optimistic shout but thankfully a quorum was finally achieved with the help of a spare from the home team (many thanks Rupert !). Stringer opened up and caused immediate problems with lift and bounce, while Pari Job (2-12) floated up his little induckers to great effect. Combined they removed the top 3 cheaply. A kamikaze run out put the home team in more trouble before a useful stand between their skipper Will Tebbit & Barlow. This was broken by the old 3 card trick from Siebert (3-27). 2 dreadful long hops, rightfully despatched into the yonder, before snaring the skipper with a full ball outside off nicked behind where James Brierley took a smart catch. Deputant Justus Van Lare (1-19) then impressed all (not just with his name) but with his good pace which was duly rewarded with a wicket in his final over. Being 8 down with the score barely over 100 there were some useful contributions from the tale despite tight bowling by Will Addison & Scottie. This took the score up to 151 before Stringer came back and castled the final pair to give him well deserved figures of 3-26.

In reply the Grannies, no doubt fuelled by the ham & egg sarnies, flew out of the traps with both Andy Bortz Minshaw (34) & Charlie Walford (20) taking advantage of the short boundary. Wickets though started to tumble as Tebbit produced a fine display of tight off spin bowling & the Grannies worked their traditional magic of finding new and innovative ways of surrendering their wickets. Brierley looked totally at home before trying to knock the ball out of the park only to loop it up to slip, Rupert Williams, our ringer, forgot to keep his feet in the crease and was stumped & Will Addison having hit some beautiful shots in his quick fire 30, looked on aghast as he missed a straight one. In truth though the total was never going to be a problem once Tebbit was bowled out (4-24), particularly as Scottie started to get into his ginger groove and played some sumptuous cover drives and flicks off his leg. Victory came for the loss of 5 wickets and with 7 overs to spare. All in all another splendid day at this wonderful ground.

Grannies chased them down with 5 wickets and several overs to spare.

How to get there
Follies Farm is a mile out of Chiddingfold on the road to Dunsfold. Chiddingfold is on the A283 about halfway between Milford (just off the A3) and Petworth. Heading south on the A283 at Chiddingfold turn left at the green (not the cricket pitch). Follow this road out of Chiddingfold for about a mile and take the first turning left. Follies Farm is on the right hand side. The ground is not visible from the road but is down a track perpendicular to the road running through the farm. Mind the pig!
