Result - Dusters (T20)

Fri Jun 5th Grannies win

Match report

The Grannies took to the field looking more than handy on paper but we all know what that usually foretells. But not this time. On the batting front we had 4 retirements on 30+: in (heavily subjective)order of excellence, Harry Yeates (returning from cricket-free Canada); Joe Hall (returning from cricket-free...life); Zaki Rostami and John Gibbons (back where they belong). We also had cameos from Martin Stringer, Sam Martin - and Mark de St Croix (the only man they actually got out!) All told 175 for 1 in 20. We then opened with said Zaki (which appears to be Afghanistani for 'very quick') who (a) got their new master-in-charge out (b) broke your correspondent's thumb and (c) had to be taken off. Wickets continued to tumble, though. Gerard Walsh bowled the ball of the day, trimming the top of off. Henry Davies - in a side thick, although not that unpleasantly so, with dark blues, a cricket blue! - rolled back the years and took 4 for (2 stumped by the 1-thumbed keeper). Joe Huxley super-subbed as bowler, darting them in to good effect. Sam Martin generated pace which must have surprised even him (after the night out he'd had with fellow Kiwis, Southee and Williamson, the night before). And both Gibbons and Hall came to the party too. Net result Dusters all out for 98.
The game was though but the prelude to more of the Dusters' famed hospitality, the barbecue and beers lasting well into the hours of darkness. Profound thanks to them for that and for giving us all the chance to play on one of the great grounds in London against as genial an opposition as you could hope to find.
